A Service Dog, a Support Animal, and a Therapy Animal Walk Into a Room. Only One Can Stay.

Three lovely animals. Three different jobs. The store, the apartment, and the airplane each have their own answer, and the answer rarely depends on how sweet the dog is. It depends on what the animal was trained to do and who it works for. Open the explorer and we will sort all three in plain words, with the federal law printed next to each one.

Tres animales encantadores. Tres trabajos distintos.

Three buttons, three different lives. Choose Service Dog, Support Animal or therapy animal. The picture on the left changes to match, and the panel on the right lays out the job, the person it serves, and the single legal line you most need to remember. No marketing. Just the facts as they stand in 2026.Tres botones, tres vidas distintas.

Its job is to be near you. Steady company softens a hard day. The law shields it where you live.Su trabajo es estar cerca de usted. La compañía constante suaviza un día difícil. La ley lo protege donde usted vive.

A Service Dog clocks in. It has a trained job to do.Un perro de servicio entra a trabajar. Tiene una tarea entrenada que cumplir.

Think of it as a working partner. A guide dog steers a blind handler around a curb. A diabetic alert dog smells a blood sugar drop and warns its person before a meter would. A psychiatric Service Dog leans hard into a chest to break a panic surge. The trained task is the engine of the whole role, and it is exactly what the law looks for.

What it doesQué hace

Performs at least one trained task tied straight to the handler's disability, on cue or on its own when it reads the moment.

Who it is forPara quién es

One person, the handler, whose disability the dog is trained to ease. Under federal law a Service Dog must be a dog.

Public access under the Americans with Disabilities Act, housing under the Fair Housing Act, and cabin travel under the Air Carrier Access Act. It carries all three.

● The widest reach of the three● El mayor alcance de los tres

A Support Animal does its whole job just by being there.

It takes the edge off anxiety, lifts a low day, sits beside grief and fills a quiet room. No task is trained because none is needed. It might be a dog, a cat, a rabbit or another animal you keep at home. The comfort itself is the help, and clinicians treat that comfort as real and worth documenting.

What it doesQué hace

Gives comfort and steadiness through presence. No trained task is involved, and that missing task is the very line that keeps it apart from a Service Dog.Da consuelo y firmeza con su presencia.

Who it is forPara quién es

A person with an emotional or mental health condition that an animal's company helps. Many common household species can qualify.

Housing only, under the Fair Housing Act. With a letter from a Licensed Clinical Doctor, a no-pets rule and pet fees can be set aside. No public access. No cabin right since the 2021 rule.

● Its right lives at home● Su derecho vive en casa

A therapy animal shows up to brighten a room, then clocks out and goes home a pet.

It is a calm, social animal that its owner brings on planned visits to hospitals, schools, libraries, hospices and care homes. It lowers stress and lifts the mood of a whole group at once. Notice the difference. It works for the people it visits, not for the person holding the leash, and each place chooses to let it in. It carries no access right of its own. Note la diferencia.

What it doesQué hace

Visits a facility with its handler and offers gentle contact to patients, students or residents. A program usually screens and registers the team before any visit.

Who it is forPara quién es

The people a facility serves, not the animal's owner. The benefit flows to patients, students and groups, by the invitation of the site.

None of its own. A therapy animal holds no individual public access right and no housing right. It enters only where a facility welcomes its program. At home and in a store it is a pet, plain and simple.Ninguna propia.

✕ No personal access or housing right✕ Sin acceso propio ni derecho de vivienda

Two Questions Decide Which Animal You HaveDos preguntas deciden qué animal tiene

Scroll the cards on the right and watch the meaning shift under a single image. You do not need a law degree to place an animal in the right role. You need two short questions, asked in order. Read them slowly, because together they decide where the animal is welcome.

A cream-colored dog curled up resting on a blanket on a chair by a fireplace at home
Ask two thingsPregunte dos cosas

Was it trained to do a task. Whose benefit is it really for. The two answers drop the animal into one of the three roles.¿Fue entrenado para una tarea?

Question onePregunta uno

Was it trained to perform a task¿Fue entrenado para una tarea?

If a dog is trained to do a specific task for a disability, it is a Service Dog and the doors of public life open. If no task was trained, public access is off the table no matter how much the animal helps a person feel better. This one answer pulls the Service Dog away from the other two roles.

Question twoPregunta dos

Who is the animal really helping¿A quién ayuda en realidad el animal?

A Service Dog and a Support Animal both work for one person, their owner, so each can hold a right of its own. A therapy animal works for other people, the patients and students it visits, so its access belongs to the facility that invites it. The access never belongs to the animal or to the handler.

The outcomeEl resultado

Two answers, three clear rolesDos respuestas, tres roles claros

Trained task plus works for the owner equals a Service Dog with public access. No trained task plus works for the owner equals a Support Animal with a housing right. Works for other people equals a therapy animal with no personal right at all. Same loyal heart, three very different maps.

The Honest ScorecardLa tarjeta honesta

One row for each question. One column for each role. This is the part to screenshot before you sign a lease or buy a plane ticket. Where a column reads no, no vest, no card and no online registry changes that answer.

A label is not a keyUna etiqueta no es una llave

Calling an animal a therapy animal does not unlock a store, and calling a pet a Service Dog does not turn it into one. The role follows the facts. A trained task, a real condition, and the person the animal actually serves. Any site that sells a registry or a vest as proof of public access is selling a story, not a right.

The Therapy Animal, the One Most People Picture WrongEl animal de terapia, el que más gente imagina mal

Of the three roles, the therapy animal is the one most people confuse with the other two. It does genuinely lovely work. It simply does that work on different terms than a Service Dog or a Support Animal. Here is how the role actually runs day to day.

A smiling woman walking a small dog in a coat on a city sidewalk on a calm day

It is there for the room, not for one ownerEstá ahí para la sala, no para un dueño

A reading dog in a school library gives a shy child a patient listener to read aloud to. A visiting dog on a hospital ward turns a long afternoon into one soft minute. The animal is present for those people, and its owner stays right at its side the whole time. That shared, public kindness is the very heart of the therapy role.

Most therapy teams join a registered program that checks the animal's temperament and the handler's skill, then carries insurance for the visits. Many programs also ask for a clean health check from a veterinarian before the team starts. The facility, a hospital or a school, sets its own rules about who may come and when. None of that paperwork gives the animal a right to enter anywhere else. Off the visit, it is simply a much loved pet.

Once the visit is over, the therapy dog sleeps at home like any other pet. The calm it brought was real, but it carries no access right of its own.

Follow the Line to the Right AnswerSiga la línea hacia la respuesta correcta

Trace the line down the page. Each stop asks you one thing. By the last stop you will know which of the three roles matches your life, and which document, if any at all, you actually need.

1

Is your aim to comfort other people¿Su meta es consolar a otras personas?

If you want to visit hospitals, schools or care homes and bring comfort to patients and students, you are looking at the therapy role. That path runs through a registered therapy program, not through a clinical letter. You do not need a letter from us for that, and we will say so honestly.

2

Is your dog trained to do a task for your disability¿Su perro hace una tarea por su discapacidad?

If your dog is trained to perform a specific task tied to a disability, such as alerting, guiding or breaking a panic surge, you are in Service Dog territory and public access is on the table. If no task is trained, carry on to the next stop.

3

Does the animal ease a condition just by being near¿El animal alivia una condición solo con estar cerca?

If a companion animal eases anxiety, depression, grief or another condition simply by keeping you company, that points to the Support Animal role. Its strong protection is housing. The document a landlord asks for is a letter from a Licensed Clinical Doctor.

This add-on is for Service Dogs, not Support Animals and not therapy animals. A Support Animal needs no task training, so it does not apply here. If your dog is trained to perform tasks for a disability, Service Dog Training Plus records that work. You upload short video evidence of each trained task. A CSDT #6202 certified professional trainer reviews the footage, scores each skill and issues an official training attestation that does not expire.

Three Roles, Straight AnswersTres roles, respuestas directas

In one line, how do the three roles differ?¿En una línea, en qué se diferencian los tres roles?

A Service Dog is trained to do a task for its own handler and goes in public. A Support Animal comforts its owner and is protected at home. A therapy animal visits other people to comfort them and holds no right of its own. The job and the person it serves tell you which is which.

My dog is gentle and well behaved. Does that make it a Service Dog?Mi perro es manso y educado. ¿Eso lo hace un perro de servicio?

No, and this is the most common mix-up. Good behavior is wonderful, but a Service Dog is defined by a trained task done for a disability, not by manners. A calm, friendly dog with no trained task is a pet or, with the right care plan, a Support Animal. Behavior matters for access, but the trained task is what creates the role.

No. Housing protection under the Fair Housing Act belongs to assistance animals, meaning Service Dogs and Support Animals that serve their own owner. A therapy animal serves the people it visits, so it has no housing right. At home it is a pet, and a no-pets rule can apply to it like any other pet.

Can one dog be a Support Animal and a therapy animal at the same time?¿Un mismo perro puede ser animal de apoyo y de terapia a la vez?

Yes, because the roles describe two jobs, not two dogs. A friendly dog can comfort its owner at home as a Support Animal and also visit a care home as part of a therapy program. The housing right comes from the Support Animal role. The visits run through the therapy program. Neither one opens a store or an airline cabin.

Which of the three can come into a grocery store with me?¿Cuál de los tres puede entrar conmigo a un supermercado?

Only a trained Service Dog. Public access in stores, restaurants and other places of business belongs to Service Dogs under the ADA. A Support Animal and a therapy animal are both treated as pets in those settings, no matter how calm or well trained they look.

No. A therapy team is approved through a registered therapy program that screens the animal and the handler, not through a clinical letter. A doctor's letter is what documents a Support Animal for housing or supports a Service Dog. For visits, you work with a program and the facility you hope to serve.

Which role can be a cat or an animal that is not a dog?¿Cuál rol puede ser un gato o un animal que no es perro?

A Support Animal can be a cat, a rabbit or another common household animal, because housing protection is not limited to dogs. A Service Dog must be a dog under the ADA. Therapy programs set their own species rules, and many welcome cats and other gentle animals for visits.

Start with our free screening. It reads your situation and points you to the document that fits, a Support Animal letter for housing or a Service Dog letter with forms for public access and travel.
