What is the difference between a therapy dog and an emotional support animal?

A therapy dog is trained to provide comfort to other people in settings like hospitals, schools, and nursing homes — the dog works for others. An emotional support animal provides therapeutic benefit specifically to its owner for a diagnosed mental health condition and is protected in housing. They have completely different legal rights.

What is a therapy dog?

A therapy dog is a trained dog that provides emotional comfort and support to people in facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes, schools, courthouses, and disaster relief sites. Therapy dogs work for the benefit of others — not for the handler's own disability accommodation.

How do I get my dog certified as a therapy dog?

Therapy dog certification typically involves a temperament evaluation, basic obedience assessment, and supervised facility visits through organizations like Pet Partners, Therapy Dogs International, or Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Your dog must be well-socialized, calm around strangers, and comfortable in unfamiliar environments.

Can therapy dogs go anywhere service dogs can?

No. Therapy dogs do not have public access rights under the ADA. A therapy dog can only enter facilities that have specifically invited or approved therapy dog visits. Outside of scheduled visits, a therapy dog has the same access as any pet. Only trained service dogs have unrestricted public access rights.

What is the difference between a therapy dog and a service dog?

A therapy dog visits facilities to comfort others and has no special legal access rights for its handler. A service dog is trained to perform specific tasks for its handler's disability and has public access rights under the ADA. The legal protections are entirely different.

Do therapy dogs need any special training?

Therapy dogs need reliable basic obedience, comfort with being handled by strangers including children and elderly individuals, calmness around wheelchairs and medical equipment, and no reactivity to loud or sudden noises. Most programs require a Canine Good Citizen evaluation or equivalent.

Do therapy dog handlers need documentation?

Therapy dog handlers carry credentials from their certifying organization — not clinical documentation like service dog or ESA handlers. If you need documentation for housing accommodations, you need an emotional support animal or service dog evaluation from a Licensed Clinical Doctor, not therapy dog credentials.

Can a therapy dog also be an emotional support animal?

Yes. A dog can serve as a therapy dog for volunteer visits and also be documented as an emotional support animal for its owner's housing accommodations. These are two separate designations with different legal protections.

What breeds make the best therapy dogs?

Any breed can be a therapy dog. Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and Standard Poodles are popular choices, but mixed breeds frequently excel. Individual temperament matters more than breed.

What facilities accept therapy dog visits?

Hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, rehabilitation centers, schools, universities, libraries, courthouses for witness support, disaster relief sites, and mental health treatment centers. Each facility sets its own policies for therapy dog visits.
